When most people think of occupational therapy, they think of helping people regain the ability to perform activities of daily living after an injury or illness. However, occupational therapy can also help people with neurologic conditions.

Some of the most common neurologic conditions that can be treated with occupational therapy include:

  • Alzheimer’s disease: Occupational therapy can help people with Alzheimer’s disease by providing activities that can help stimulate the mind and improve memory.
  • Parkinson’s disease: Occupational therapy can help people with Parkinson’s disease by providing exercises that can help improve dexterity and range of motion.
  • Stroke: Occupational therapy can help people who have had a stroke by providing activities that can help with recovery of movement and cognitive function.
  • Traumatic brain injury: Occupational therapy can help people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury by providing activities that can help with recovery of function.
  • Multiple sclerosis: Occupational therapy can help people with multiple sclerosis by providing exercises that can help improve balance and coordination.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a neurologic condition, talk to your doctor about whether occupational therapy may be right for you.
